Lewis,
I agree with you on the spelling issue. I have seen Capps spelled Capse, Caps, Capes, Cupps, Copps etc.
The best I can do is follow them back and see where it goes.
The info I have on Robert Capps has him first as you said 1638 listed as Cape with Cob Howell importing him, however I never have found evidence he was indetured except that entry does say it was for Cob's personal advantage. This could mean the 50 A of land a man would get for each person imported.
In 1845 William Jacobs imports a Robert Capps. In 1651 Robert Capps goes into a contract with Robert Spring to buy land from Peter Rigilsworth, he died by 1652 and his wodpw Jane rmearried to Thomas Horne, Thomas sells the land to Caps and Spring in 1653 as asuured in Peter Riggilsworth's will. Also in 1652 Robert Caps and Robert Spring import 6 persons together and recieve 300 A. In 1653 Robert Capps inports 4 people including a woman named Isabel Hingle. This surely was about the time Robert had a daughter Mary as she marries abt 1674 to Thomas Hollowell. in 1663 Mary Capps is deeded the land that was granted to her father. Mary Capps Hollowell died by 1682 and her daughter Mary was given the land.
Robert was given more land than this and also bought some, so there is not a clear picture of who recieved the rest of his land. Hoping possibly for a male descendent in there somewhere.
My Capps were in Georgia by 1822 or so, probably coming from Tn, they were in Habersham Ga in 1827 when the orphans recieved a land lottery fortunate draw. By 1840 they are back in TN.
I have no idea who their parents were and really they could have been Capes as easily as Capps.
Yes I am looking for a Thomas Caps but with the possibility that some Caps may be Capes and vice versa I figured I better check them out too.
I see a Thomas Capper in Orange NC, a Barney Cabe in Orange NC and some Cates.
There were some Capps who said they were born in Chatham NC in 1761 or so and this was actually Orange NC at that time so I have been looking in Orange to see if I find any there at that time.
Interesting you Cape came out of Granville/ Warren with the large number of Capps there. Oh sometimes it is just a mess isn't it?
Nancy
