I've heard a similar story from my husband's uncle Tom (Simon P.'s son from his second marriage). His story was that Simon P. was active in the IRA and became persona non grata and was deported to Australia. However, he jumped ship in San Francisco and worked his way east to Boston on the railroad. I have found no evidence to support this fanciful tale and suspect it may be the product of an overactive imagination. If you can find some documentation, I'd pay you for a copy of it!
