CANTWELL's from Stephen b. 1790/William Jr. b. 1791/Abner b. 1793/James b. 1795/ Richard Dickson b. 1795/ John Aquilla b.1798/ Susan b. 1799/ Casinda b. 1801/ Washington Jackson b. 1802/ Tilghman Anderson b. 1803/ Elisha b. 1807/ Baruch b. 1817/ Hazel Grant b. 1820 All children of WILLIAM CANTRELL b.abt. 1769 in Orange CO. NC and with the exception of the last two on the list, ELIZABETH PAGE (Paige) CANTRELL/CANTWELL.....last two children being born to 2nd wife, Mrs. Mary Delicia MAYO n'ee BUTTS.
If you have any of these folks then your line is CANTRELL. William/Elizabeth can be found mentioned in the 1850 census listings of Madison CO., ARK. along with Abner (who married Mary MAXIE)William (who married Cyntha)and various offspring of these folks. James and William can be found in the 1829 Sheriff Census, Arkansas 20 North of the Arkansas River. This is all on line and there is more than I'll list here. You just need to look. Suffice to say you will find some spellings CANTRELL and some CANTWELL, these men could neither read or write for the most part......but going back behind the father, WILLIAM

JOSEPH CANTRELL who was born in VA abt. 1748. His family moved to the northwestern part of old Orange co. NC. The name of his wife is not known.....but he had son William and 6 daughters that we know about re: census info. And the PAGE family is in the same census area. If you want to get behind these fellows then you find the father of the JOSEPH CANTRELL mentioned above had father JOHN CANTRELL b. abt. 1724 in New Castle, PA (now Delaware) and migrated with his father JOSEPH and uncle ZEBULON to the big valley of VA. where he grew to manhood.

John's first wife was a Miss Brittin. In 1738 Samuel Breeton/Brittin lived in the same VA. area. He may also have had a second wife.) It is assumed he married in VA. before moving to NC. Sometime around 1765 he sold his lands and moved down to the Spartenburg SC area. He is picked up again in land records having purchased 75 on Buck Creek in 1779. His family became active in the Buck Creek Baptist Church est. abt 1779, and many CANTRELLS are buried in on the church property. John's brother Isaac became a minister to this church. John died sometime before 1803 as his sons Abraham, Stephen and Moses were appointed to adminster
his estate. He also names his widow as Jane...but she could be the second wife. The number of children attributed to John has become muddled. some say he had 21 sons and two daughters.....but some of these children may have actually been cousins (children of Iassc's who had 20 children by three wives)At decendents of 16 of the children have been located....14 son and two daughters. This section definately needs more research and clarity.

Behind this JOHN CANTRELL is his father JOSEPH CANTRIL *** note the spelling change**Joseph b. abt. 1695 in PA. JOSEPH married Cathrina HEATH (there is still on going research regarding the correctness of the HEATH connection) JOSEPH was the son of RICHARD CANTRIL b. bet. 1660-1666, originally of Derbyshire ENG.who settled in PA abt. 1689 in Philadelphia, PA. and Dorothy JONES. who came over from Liverpool, 1682 on the ship SUBMISSION with her parents, Ellis and Jane JONES, when she was 10. This info. is all well documented. RICHARD CANTRIL married DOROTHY JONES in the early 1690's. they had 4 children; Mary b. 1694, JOSEPH b. 1695, Zebulon, b. 1697 and Dorothy b. 1699. It is this JOSEPH from which all the above CANTRIL, CANTRELL, CANTWELL information comes.

I send you this information because I think it is helpful to those reseaching the CANTWELL line as I was to find out that sometimes when you think you know find out there is more to the story. NEVER would I have thought I was a CANTRELL.....but once discovering the name spelling variations I had to know why.....hope this is of help in your searches......Sharyn CANTWELL BAKER
