The name Cantú is said to be common in parts of Mexico and the U.S. states bordering on Mexico but rather uncommon elsewhere. Some say the name is of Spanish/Portuguese origin but I have my doubts. When I was in Madrid in the 1980s I looked in the Madrid phone book and found no listings whatsoever with that surname. I found odd since Madrid is Spain’s capital and largest city and I thought it would surely have drawn in some people with that surname if it was from any part of Spain.
In the early 1990s a friend of mine sent me a map on which he had circled a small town with the name “Cantů” located about 31 kilometers north of central Milan near the southern end of Lake Como.
In the late 1990s a cashier at a store in Dallas, Texas to whom I had just handed my credit card began speaking to me in a language that I did not recognize. Upon seeing the look of bewilderment on my face she asked if I was Romanian and informed me that the Cantú surname is common in Romania.
I recently ran across information on the internet suggesting that the name Cantú is of Romanian origin and that it is the Romanian version of the Greek names Kantsos and Kantsu.
