My Name Is Mario Cantu Cantu I was born in Gachupines, municipio de Dr. Coss, Nuevo Leon. I was given this info. from a relative several years ago perhaps it may be of interest to some people.

CANTU
"This surname is not known in any Latin American country other than Mexico and has not been identified in Spain. It is not a true Spanish name and probably originated in Italy, becoming a surname after its spelling was modified.
Nevertheless, Cantu is the 80th most common Hispanic surname in the U.S. All Cantu families descend from Mexican roots.
It was probably in the 1620's that three Cantu brothers arrived in Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Jeronimo, believed to be the oldest, was born about 1585. He married Juliana de Trevino. His brother, Jose married Mariana de Trevino, Juliana's sister.
The couples settled east of Monterrey and apparantly became the progenitors of almost all known Cantus.
The third brother. Lorenzo, was a priest at Matehuala. Later he went into the Rio Blanco country and remained there.
In 1654, a man named Tomas Cantu, who described himself as an illegitimate son of Jose Cantu, stated that he had been born at the Minas de Ramos around 1628. The mines were located between Zacatecas and Matehuala."

The source of this information was from the Instituto Genealogico e Historico Latinoamericano.
