Hello,

I am also looking for a Cantu from China, NL. I know the name of only Matilde Cantu who married Esteban Valdez. Their daughter, my ancestor, was born in about 1874; so I would suppose they married a little before that time.

An old family story is told of Matilde's mother being the daughter of a wealthy man. (possibly a merchant, and possibly Portugese) She eloped at a young age with the indian gardener. The names I was told for these two persons are Francisco Navarro Cantu and Mariana Contrerras. However, these may not be their actual names since they were taken from the memory of my aged grandfather, who would have been the great grandson of the couple, and of course, never met them.

In any case, Esteban Valdez and Matilde Cantu raised their family in China, and lived there at least around 1874.

If you have any other information on the family, I would be incredibly greatful since this is a difficult branch for me to research.

John Wilmot
