Thomas Cantrell(1761-1830) Revolutionary War Service update??
Thomas is included on an undated Revolutionary War roster available on Fold3 and at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=grantpinnix&id=I007392http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=grantpinnix&id=I007392
This reference also states that Will(iam) McIntosh- also on the roster - was a private under the same Captain from March 26, 1778 to Dec 1 1778. This narrows the date for Thomas's service to some time during that period. Also, it identifies them as being in Lieut. Col. Lytle's Command of the 6th NC Line.
Christie's quotes William Magness Cantrell as saying Thomas was captured at the Battle at Cowpens and then placed on a British ship to be sent to Britain. Since the British lost the Battle of Cowpens and were all but wiped out, they would not have hauled prisoners back to the coast to put them on a ship.
I propose (can not verify) that it is much more likely that he was at the Battle of Charleston in 1789-90 where over 5000 colonials surrendered and it is documented that the prisoners were place on British ships in the Charleton Harbor. At that time the 6th had been combined into the 1st NC Line which participated in the battle. http://www.6nc.org/about6nc/6th_history.htmlhttp://www.6nc.org/about6nc/6th_history.html
Can anyone add clarity or additional references to this situation?
