Book source: History of Virginia, stated Stephen Cantrell was born 28 July 1758 to Zebulon Cantrell and Mary Montgomery.

Capt. Steven Cantrell Sr. served in the Continental Line (Militia) of North Carolina, Revolutionary War.

The state of Tennessee records show that Stephen Cantrell served on a committee of three, which designed the State Seal for the State of Tennessee.

To son Stephen Cantrell Jr, heirs, land in Wilson Co. on Cumberland River, 120 acres patented # 4307 and 4308. also l/3 lo t # 73 in Nashville, Davidson Co. etc. Daughter Sarah Willis wife of Caleb Willis, 150 acre s patent in name of William Bowen on North side of Cumberland River in Sumner Co. adjoining Jesse Carrett, etc. and deeds and transfer made to me by heirs of David Carson and adjoining tract heretoafter conveyed to said Sarah Willis on West of Mose River, etc. To children of my son Ota Cantrell tract land 264 acres east fork Stone River commonly known as Andrews Branch in Rutherford Co. My son William Cantrell and that part of Wilkerson's tract land that lies west and south Station Camp Creek in Sumner Co. and lot in town of Gallatin, Sumner Co. known by lot # 9. To son Zebulon Cantrell an equal division with his brother Darly H. Cantrell of 1574 acres in five different tracts North side of Cumberland River opposite mouth of Oly (Obey) River in Jackson Co. and 1/3 part of lot # 73 in Nashville, Davidson Co. To my daughter Mary Edwards wife of William Edwards son of Nathan Edwards, her heirs to have one half of lot # 9 in Gallatin, Sumner Co. and land on fork of Station Camp. Other lands on Obey River i n Jackson Co, and lot 73 in Nashville. To son James Madison Monroe Cantrell, 411 acres land Rutherford Co. on Stewart Creek and 640 acres tract granted by North Carolina being where my son Oto now lives. My son George Clinton Cantrell one half of home plantation in Madison Creek , Sumner Co. Sons James and George not of age. Dec 5 1823 proved, addition to will dated 26 A ug 1824. Annexed is "should wife Mary marry she to have one horse and cattle, bed and furniture and surrender rest, tract land 150 acres granted to tract to froo (?) bequeathed to daughter Sarah Willis including house whereon Matthew Rice lived". And Sarah to have place on which William Edwards formerly lived in Station Camp. 7 jan 1826. Codicil 6 Apr 1826. A law suit against Moly Mary N. Bowen and Samuel A. Brown Circuit Court Sumner Co. commenced by me against David S. Willis.
Codicil. I loaned $1000 to William Edwards further mention of land on
Station Camp Creek. Nov. 11 1826. Proved Feb 1827.
**note** The Cantrells of this family often spelled their name with an i (as in Cantrill).

Stephen Cantrell went to Court in Sumner Co. Tennessee in 1803 to legitamatize his children, he was
also in the Davidson County court records in 1796 as Davidson Academy auditor, in Davidson Co. and again in 1807 in Sumner Co. as Commissioner-funding for state academies. In 1812 (court records of Sumner Co.) Stephen was Director of Nashville Bridge Company.
