Lee Ann, I have the World Family Tree CDs. Vol. 4, tree # 0585 has a ton of information on the Cantley family. No sources are cited, but I have found some supporting information. Here is what I have on James: He was b. 1832, Arkansas, d. bef 1900, Sebastian Co., Arkansas, m. Salina Jones b. 1832, Arkansas. Children: Martha A. (should it be J.?), b. 1855 and Sarah A. b. 1859. James married second on 19 Oct 1865 to Louisa C. Baker, b. 1836, North Carolina. Their children were: Mary M. b. 1867; Grant G. b. 1868; Ella J. b. 1872; Lucy b. 1874; James F. b. 1878 and Hulda G. b. 1879. The 1960 Census shows James and Salina (shown as b. in Tennessee) in Redland, Hempstead Co., Arkansas. Arkansas marriages 1851-1900 shows James Cantley Jr and Saline E. Jones married 26 Jul 1854 in Hempstead Co., Arkansas. Civil War Service Records show that he was a private in Co. D, Hardy's Regiment, Arkansas Infantry (Confederate). James was the son of James Cantley b. 1794, Greenbrier Co., Virginia, d. 14 Sep 1861, Hempstead Co., Arkansas and Sarah Best b. 1800, Kentucky, d. abt 1868, Hempstead Co., Arkansas. James and Sarah had nine children: William, b. 1818, Missouri, d. 18 Nov 1879, Nevada Co., Arkansas; Isaac b. 1824, Missouri, d. abt 1865; John b. 1820, Missouri, d. bef 1880; Setphen b. 1826, Texas, d. 11 Jan 1862 in the Civil War; Martha G. b. 1828, d. bef 1860; James b. 1832, Arkansas, d. bef 1900, Sebastian Co., Arkansas (as above); Casandra b. 1836, Arkansas, Eliza A. b. 1838, Arkansas and Ebenezer b. 1842, Arkansas. James Cantley (1794 the father) was the son of John Cantley, Jr. b. 1765, Virginia, d. abt 1835, Franklin Co., Missouri and Jane Kincaid b. 1768, Virginia, d. in Franklin Co., Missouri. John and Jane's other children were John Cantley III and Samuel Cantley (my 3rd great grandfather). Incidently, Sarah Best (wife of the elder James) was the sister of Rebecca Best my 3rd great grandmother, wife of Samuel Cantley. The two brothers married two sisters as frequently happened in those days. It makes tracing a bit more difficult since they also frequently gave their children similar or even the same names. Hope this helps. There is more on this family. Let me know if you need it. Mary Notify Administrator about this message?
