“Town Talk---William Shaw, who lives in the 5th District, was attacked Sunday morning just as he had finished breakfast in his own home by Bob and Henry Cansler, his brother-in-law. Mr. Shaw happened to have a pistol lying by and this he proceeded to use with deadly effect. Bob Cansler was shot through the jaw and tongue, and Henry coming up, began the attack with a large piece of scantling wood he was using with murderous intent when Shaw shot him through the side, from the effects of which he died in a very short time. It was a case of self defense and public opinion pronounces the killing justifiable.”

“Eve Mills, August 27, 1894---On Sunday morning, Aug. 26, William Shaw, a man of no good report, shot and killed Henry Cansler and perhaps fatally wounded Robert Cansler. The Cansler’s and Shaw are brothers-n-law. The country is full of all kinds of rumors and considerable excitement prevails, but from the best information we can obtain, Shaw’s children had been throwing rocks on Cansler’s house. Cansler went over to Shaw’s and a few profane words and violent threats brought on a fight, in which Shaw shot Cansler in the jaw, the ball passing through his tongue and knocking out some of his jaw teeth, coming out on the other side. Henry Cansler soon ran in to help his brother, and a shot from Shaw’s deadly pistol brought him to the ground, a dead boy, he being about 18 years old. Squire Hargrave held a jury of inquest over the dead body. At last reports Shaw was still at large.”
