I have found a Hugh Lawson Kantzler born in 1835 in Monroe County, TN. His mother was Katherine Kantzler the daughter of a German immigrant. His father was one of their slaves. Katherine raised Hugh by herself and he later changed the spelling to Cansler. Hugh went on to marry Laura Scott. She opened the first school for blacks in Knoxville, TN in 1863. 5 of their 9 children, Charles, William, Fritz, Rex and Nannie went on to be educators. I also know that Hugh Cansler (Katherine's son was born in 1876.
So to try to clarify things: Conrad Kantzler's daughter was Katherine, She and slave had Hugh Lawson Kantzler (b. 1835). Hugh married Laura Scott and they had children, William (b.1863), Sammie (b.1866), Carl (b.1868), Nannie (b.1870), Charles(b.1871), Harry(b.1873), Hugh(1876), Lee(1889), Fritz(1891).
