Dear Mr. Burchfield:
Re: John R. Canon Family of Polk County, Texas
The cemetery committee of the Polk County Historical Commission (PCHC) is
working on updating the 1976 county cemetery book. I was recently notified by
a property owner that a Canon cemetery existed in a pasture on his property and
it has never appeared in any cemetery book in Polk County or Tyler County.
This cemetery is located very near the county line between these counties, but is
definitely in Polk County. I have visited with the property owner and been to
the cemetery.
Mrs. Bobinger of our Museum (which is a part of the PCHC) asked me if
I would advise you of this information........
Beside the information which I found at the cemetery, I have put together some
genealogy-lineage information on the John R. Canon family for the Canon
Family folder at the Museum. You may already have most of this information
that I am enclosing. ...........It includes the descendant information that I could
find here on the families of John J. Canon, Edward P. Canon, and Robert T.
Canon.Since Valerius C. Canon moved from Polk County we have no
information on his descendants for our Museum file, even though we have
requests for it.
Any information that you or any Canon descendant of John R. Canon desire to
contribute to the Museum will be greatly appreciated. Their address is: Polk
County Memorial Museum, 514 W. Mill Street, Livingston, Texas 77351, attn:
Mrs. Wanda Bobinger, (The museum does not have computer capability yet.)
As a member of the Commission and with the approval of the property owner, I
intend to place two additional government markers in the Canon Cemetery. A
Confederate footstone which will show the birth & death dates of Edward P.
Canon and a Spanish American footstone which will show the birth & death
dates of Edward P. Canon, Jr. At present it is questionable whether the Spanish
American marker belongs to E. P Canon Jr. or Sr. However, that is presently
being researched with the Federal Government.
The property owner has agreed to allow the local camp of the Sons of the
Confederate Veterans to clean up the cemetery and to repair and re-erect some of
the markers which have fallen over. At present the little cemetery is covered
with leaves, vines, limbs, weeds, etc. It is a beautiful location for a cemetery on a
hill under large trees overlooking the hay fields below. If you ever make another
trip from Arizona back to Texas, I'm sure the property owner will be happy for
you to see the cemetery. The Camp will not clean up the cemetery before cool
weather in the Fall.
The property owner also advised me that he knows of only one living
descendant of Edward F. Canon, his great-grandson Edwin Canon Powell who
he thinks lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma. There are probably Reed great-
grandchildren of Edward P. Canon living in West Texas and New Mexico.

I will be happy to put any information in the Canon Family folder at the
Museum. I can be reached at the above address or by telephone/internet:

Sincerely,
Cannon H. Pritchard

Located outside of the fenced area was the grave of Bertha Griffin, B. October 30, 1882 D. September 11,
1884. She was probably the daughter of John & Mary Griffin. Family legend states there was an internal
Griffin family conflict and the Canon Family allowed the infant to be buried on their property. Families
are not related.
NOTE: It is probable that John J. Canon (son of Edward F.) and his wife Hattie P. were buried here prior
to 1910. Edward F. Canon's parents, Dr. John R. Canon, MD and his wife Ann T. (Waring) Canon are
buried at this cemetery or at the Moscow Cemetery in unmarked graves near their son, Dr. John Jobe
Canon, MD
LOCATION: Take Highway 1745 from Barnes and go 3.1 miles. Turn left on the County Line Road and
go I mile. Locked gate on the left side of the road. Behind looked gate the cemetery is located 1/2 mile
down private road on the right under trees. Permission from property owner is needed to visit the
Cemetery.

Dr. John R. & Ann T. Canon are probably buried at the Moscow Cemetery, but may be buried at the
Canon Cemetery. The Canon Family came to Texas in 1856 from Florida. Two of the Canon's sons had
married in Florida prior to coming to Texas. Dr. Canon was the primary physician for the town of
Moscow from his arrival to his death in 1868. Dr. John Jobe Canon replaced his father after the Civil
War. Valerius Canon became a Methodist minister and left Polk County. Robert T. Canon was a farmer
and died of yellow fever during the war in Galveston. Edward F. Canon was a school teacher and a
successful farmer. Three of Dr. Canon's sons served in the Confederate States Army.
