Some reports from the Abilene Reporter May 18, 1900:

Front page:
Mr. W.G. Canon was born in the state of North Carolina about 75 years ago; and departed this life the 16th day of May, 1900, at 1:00 am. In early life he moved with his mother to the state of Mississippi. He came to Texas in 1863, and to Taylor county about 20 years ago. He was a good citizen, a true man, a faithful husband and an affectionate father. He was ever thoughtful of the best interests of his family in point of education, sociall, morally and spiritually, whatever contributed to the well being of his family in all these particulars was appreciated by him. he had a high sense of honor, and admired the noble and the true wherever he saw them. He was benevolent, and ready to help the needy to the extent of his ability. he was positive in his convictions of right and wrong; and held uncompromisingly to the ideal standard of life as given in the Bible. He believed and studied the Bible, and had implicit faith in the Christ of the Bible as his personal Savior. He was not demonstrative, but thoughtful and earnest and sincere. It was not his habit to express his religious veiws to every person but only to his trusted friends, who could understand and appreciate them. Honor to his memory, rest to his weary body, and eternal peace to his soul, in the paradise of God, and may sweet consolations of our holy Christianity be imparted to every member of his bereaved family and may they meet him in heaven.
R. W. Benge.
