I was surfing tonight and found this following paragraph that would seem to support the Chester county origins:

In 1769 two young men in their 20s left Ireland for Pennsylvania - James and John Quinn. They were single and sons of James Quinn of County Armagh. They went to Chester County, where they likely had relatives. Here they met John Canon of East Nottingham Township. Canon persuaded them to accompany him and work for him in 1772. He was going to the
new land opened in southwestern Pennsylvania. This was near what became Canonsburg, now Chartiers Township, Washington County.

IF this is correct (and you don't know how exciting it is to have a potential TOWNSHIP...."Virginia" and even "Chester county" were too vague), it would solve what has been for me, a 25 year mystery.

I'm a descendent of his son Joshua Canon whose daughter Julia married Manning M. Brockman.

I'm still in a state of shock over finding this snippet. Needless to say, I'll be turning my efforts towards Chester county and hoping to hit paydirt there.
