Martha A. m. to John Canon, Sr.
I just posted this to the Addison Family Forum. Perhaps some here have information that can help us solve this mystery.
*I'm looking for information to try to solve a mystery (That's new in family research?) I'm descended from John Canon, Sr. who
was born in 1730 in Scotland. He came to PA then moved south to Cabarrus or Mecklenberg Co., NC.
*The mystery is whether or not he married Martha Alexander or Martha Addison. Martha is said to have been born 1733/1734 in Coch?, PA, married to John in Charlotte, NC in 1755.
*According to Hopewell Pres. Church records, they are both buried in their cemetery, John 1/1/1794, Martha A. 8/9/1798. Their grave stones give their ages at death as 64 years of age at death.
*According to the Mormon records John was married to Martha Alexander. Other evidence show that she was Martha Addison. Some evidence of this is that they had a son named James Addison Canon but none with Alexander in their names.
*Another anomaly is that Martha Alexander is said to have been the sister of John McKnitt Alexander. At the same time, Moses Moore married Ann Alexander, a sister of John Alexander's. John Canon, Jr., John and Martha A.'s son, married Mary Scott Moore, Moses and Ann Moore's daughter. If The Mormon records are correct, John Canon, Jr. married his first cousin.
*The Addison name shows up in later generations of John and Martha A. Canon's descendants also.
*I think that Martha Canon was an Addison. Any help that you can give us will be greatly appreciated.
Maybe we can clear thi smystery up once and for all.
