Benjamin Cannon/Jeremiah Cannon-1700s-Henrico and Cumberland Cos.
The following records in Hernico Co., VA may be of interest to Cannon researchers.
On 1 Jan. 1731,John Walters of Henrico "for love and affection" gives Benjamin Cannon andSusanna Cannon, his daughter, 100 acres for life and then to her children.Henrico Co. VA Deeds 1706-1737, p. 335.The deed was witnessed by Charles Cannon and Abraham Childers.John Walters signed by mark. The land was part of a tract that John Walter lived on next to James Connaway. On the 29 Jan. 1731 John Walters "for love and affection" gave James Connaway and Ann Connaway, his daughter, 100 acres for life then to the children of Ann Connaway.Henrico Co. VA Deeds 1706-1737, p. 335. Abraham Childers and Chalres Cannon witnessed this deed also. Both deeds were recorded on 7 Feb. 1731.
In the Nov. Court 1741, two deeds are recorded.the first is from James Conway and his wife Ann and Benjmain Cannon to Christopher Christmas. The second is from James Conway and his wife Ann and Benjamin Cannon and his wife Susannah to John robertson Sr.The deed was proved by John Thomas.Henrico Co. VA. Deeds, 1737-1750, p. 160.
On 9 April 1749, Mary Walters, widow of John Walter, surrenders to Benjamin Cannon and Susanna the plantation devised to Mary Walters by her husband 30 Sept. 1734.The deed was witnessed by Jacob Robertson, William Merriman, and John Eales and recorded on the 1 May 1749. Henrico Co. VA Deeds, 1737-1750, p. 100.
On 1 May 1749 Benjamin Cannon of Albemarle Co. and Sussana his wife, who is sister and co-heir of John Walters, Jr, sell to Richard Cottrel of Henrico a 1/2 interest in a plantation with all land in Henrico Co. formerly belonging to John Walters, Sr.John Walters, Sr. devised athe remainder interest in the land and plantation to his son John Walters, Jr. after the death of his wife Mary. The land was on the south side of East branch.Because John Walters Jr. died without issue and Mary surrendered her life estate, the plantation descended to Benjamain Cannon and Susanna Cannon in right of the wife, and to James Conway and Anne his wife in right of the wife, co-heirs and sisters of John Cannon, Jr.Witnesses were Jacob Robertson, William Merriman, John Eales. Both Benjmain and Sussana signed by mark. The deed was recorded 1 May 1749.Henrico Co. VA. Deeds, 1737-1750, p. 101.
On 30 Oct. 1756, Benjamin Cannon, planter, grants to Jeremiah Cannon, both of Cumberland Co., for 20 lbs., 100 acres on the south side of Deep Run, being the same 100 acres given by deed of gift from John Walters, adjacent James Connaway.Henrico Co. VA. Deeds, 1750-1774, pg. 468.
The following conclusions can reasonably be drawn from these records.
1.The wife of Benjamin Cannon was Sussanah Walters, daughter of John & Mary Walters.this is established by the deed of gift from John Walters and the deed from Mary Walters.
2.Jeremiah Cannon is the son of Benjamin Cannon and Susannah Walters. This conclusion is based on the the deed dated 30 Oct. 1756.Recall that John Walters granted Benjamin and Sussanah only a life estate in the land and that John Walters gave the remainder to the children of Sussanah.Benjamin Cannon would not be able to grant anything more than a life estate. It looks like Benjamin is making good on the will of John Walters by relinquishing his life estate in favor of his son Jeremiah.
I have just begun to research this line.I would appreciate any information you have on Jeremiah Cannon and his descendants.
