Pheonix Township, Brunswick Co, NC 1920

Hello,

I am looking for Vancie, my Great-Great Grandmother, Her death cert. listed her as the widow of C. A. Hardy and that she was 52 when she died on 13 May 1933. That would have her birthdate around 1881 and her birthplace was listed as Brunswick County with her father listed only as Canaday birthplace unknown and mother unknown. She was listed as being buried in Phoenix. I was told she was buried in Leland, NC just west of Wilmington so she could "rest by her family." I called a funeral home in Brunswick Co to see if anyone knew of a Pheonix Cemetery and it turns out that there is what is known as a Phoenix Township so I plan to investigate that a little more. I have seen several spellings for Vancie's maiden name such as Cannady on her son Daniel's SSDI, Canaday on her death cert., Kanady on her son Daniel's death cert., and I saw it listed as Kennedy somewhere else. I know that this is due to the fact that many different people were filling out these forms but it sure makes it rough to search them. SMILE.

Her husband and my Great-Great Grandfather Charlie Hardy was referred to as Charlie Hardee and he died the 7th of April 1930. His death Cert. listed him as being buried in King's Graveyard which is what I had been told but I did not find him in the Scotland County Grave Registry at the Library and never found a stone when I visited the graveyard. It is possible that the stone has been destroyed or that they never had a stone placed there but at least I know kind of where he is now. It is funny because I went by that Cemetery a hundred times when my Aunt lived in Laurel Hill, NC and always felt the strangest sense to have a bit of quiet reflection when I passed by. Anyway, the cert. also stated that Charlie was born in NC but that his father also named Charlie Hardee was born in Ireland so I guess I cannot connect with the Bertie County Hardy family after all. It also states that he lived in Scotland County for 7 years so that would put them moving from Brunswick County to Scotland County in or around 1923.

Can anyone recognize these folks?

Thanks,
Jenny
