My Grandmother Martha Cannady "Lloyd" McKinney who lived in Charlotte, NC after marriage to Theophilus Elijah McKinney, Sr., who was Dean of Johnson C Smith They used to live on a street that was full of beautiful houses owned by people of African and Native American descent, which was knocked down in the early 70's to build a ramp for the highway( entry to Beates Ford Road/Charlotte. They had a 2-3 story house with a fig tree in the backyard, a gentle slope and a tree in the front. They had an old upright piano, artifacts from their travels overseas and above the piano, which was in an alcove leading to the pantry and kitchen, was a large painting of her grandmother with hair that she could sit on. Grandmother was a strong willed woman. They had a light green old fashioned radio shaped like a horseshoe.
Martha or Marie used to live in Oxford, NC where her family(the Cannady's) owned land since the 1800's, I saw vegetables and probably there was tobacco there too. They were always free land owners, and not slaves. They have a beautiful quaint house there in Oxford NC and they went to the black church there. I believe there were only 2 churches, the black one and the white one. A small church on the only road that led through Oxford, NC in the 70's, a blip on the map, blink and you passed Oxford, NC.
Martha has 2 last names, because she was orphaned at 13yrs. Her Dad Harold Cannady "Lloyd" was married to Lilla Vaughn (Mrs Harold H.) Lloyd, she had red brown skin, a round face, a small turned up nose and broad eyebrows in her picture. Harold won a case against the railroad, when they were trying to take their land. After he won the case, they were after his life and he escaped to Northern Florida, leaving my Grand Mother. She was a survivor from a young age, born on August 6. They say there were many Tuscarora Indians in the Area, my Dad used to say we were Algonquin.
Anyone have more info?
