There were many African-American Cannadys in northern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, as early as 1705. They were all free people of color, and of mixed race. In Virginia, they were found in James City County, Sussex County and Surry County, among others, and in North Carolina, some were in Northampton County and further south.
