Hello fellow Cannadays,
I need your help in seeking slave records, that might be found in wills, estate records, etc. I doubt that we would be included in any of the family bibles, given the circumstances of the era.
I have been researching the origins of the Black Cannadays of Franklin County, VA, from the Long Branch District and possibly Blackwater, VA in Franklin. Does anyone have any information that about these two locations and could Blackwater be located in the Long Branch District?
I trace my line back to Thomas Cannaday, (Mulatto) but listed as Negro of course, B 1829 or 1830.He is listed in the National Archives, M593, 1637 Page 369 (most likely as chattel, as I cannot find a Free man of color status for him). Thomas is believed to be the son of Charles Cannaday (White) and an unknown Negro woman, born 1793 or 94.Charles Cannaday, also had another son, named Charles Cannaday, B 1828 or 1829, one year older than Thomas. Thomas would be his half brother. Charles Cannaday, Sr., one of the offspring of James Cannaday (England) B 1755 - D 1817 married to Elizabeth Raikes (Rakes) 1756-1853.
I was wondering if you have any information about slaves, possibly owned by your ancestors. Here is what I have, in addition to Thomas, I have National Archives Records on:
Lewis Cannaday, Negro, 63, B 1806, 1807, Frank Cty, VA Long Branch Dist. M593 1647 Page 382
Letita Cannaday, Negro F, 25, B 1844, 1845, Frank Cty, VA, Long Branch Dist. M593 1647 Page 382
Robert Cannaday, Negro M, 24, B 1845, 1846, Frank Cty, VA,
Blackwater, VA M593 1647 Page 268
Wiley Cannaday, Negro M, 18, B 1851, 1852, Frank Cty, VA Long Branch Dist, M593 1647, Page 494
Ruth Cannaday, Negro F, 14, B 1855, 1856, Frank Cty, VA, Long Branch
Dist, M593 1647Page 367
The above information comes from the 1870 census, without the speculation of course.
I need this information to complete a family tree that I am preparing for my cousin's 75th birthday in mid August.
Nearly, all the Black Cannadays, were land owners in Franklin County and some still are.
If you can help or offer assistance on my project please contact me.
