Cannaday(all) Franklin Co,VA and WV

I was born in Franklin County, VA in 1952. My father was Albert Johnson Cannaday, Korean War veteran, who was born in Mercer County, WV around 1925. My father died when I was very young.

My grandparents, John Will Cannaday and Eva Boyd Cannaday and my dad's only known sibling, Viola, were born in Franklin County, VA. John Will had sisters, Mary, Nettie and Artie. Grandfather John Will Cannaday also had a first cousin, who practiced medicine in Parkerburg, WV from the 1920-60s, I believe.

My great grandparents were Guy and Ellen Cannaday. Guy's brothers were David and Ang or Ange. I am uncertain if he had sisters.

Most of the known relatives reside, in Roanoke, VA, Franklin County, VA and Washington, DC. I also located a relative who retired in Kenner, LA.

Unlike, most to the Cannadays I have met elsewhere, we are Black.

Though we are many hues, some of us are extremely fair skinned and family records indicate some may have left the area and passed for white as was the custom of survival during that era.

I am very interested in hearing from the Black Cannadays or if anyone has any knowledge of Black Cannadays anywhere, please let me know.

I would also like to determine from where the Black Cannadays descended, as most I trace in Franklin County, Virginia were land-owners prior to the Civil War. This may not have been that unusual, since many Blacks in that part of Virginia were not all slaves as found on plantations in the central and eastern parts of the the state. These Blacks initially worked in partnerships or as indentured servants on small farms.

I look forward to any comments or responses. Thank you.
