Hello Juanne Hyde:

Can you clarify WHERE in Canada your Cann ancestors lived - was it perhaps Nova Scotia on the Atlantic ? If so, there is a good chance Josephine Allen's mother was French-speaking and gave her daughter her own first name. Also, Delbert (del-BARE in French) is another indication of French roots from Josephine's side of the family.

Look up CANN in the phone book - www.canada411.com - using "Nova Scotia". I suggest Nova Scotia because there were (and still are) lots of CANN families living very near the Acadian French people in Yarmouth and Digby County, at the southern tip of NS nearest to USA. The Digby CANN's would have phone numbers starting with 834-,839-,245-,467-,638-,837-. In next-door Annapolis County you might find some under 532-,665-,or 584-. In Yarmouth County they are under 742-,749-,649-,761-. Those in the 649-,742-, and 749- exchanges are right next to large French-speaking communities, as are the 837- people in Digby.

If there is no NS connection as far as you know, look up the 5 CANN names listed in the Montréal area. Perhaps they have connections with Josephine and her francophone line.
