Hi David,
Births, deaths and marriages have been recorded since 1837, although in the early day it was treated with suspicion and a lot of 'events'were not recorded. From the date you speculated in 1851,the following 'George's' births were recorded,Dec. Q.1850 @ Crediton, March Q. 1851 @ Barnstaple, Sept Q 1851 @ Crediton, March Q.1852 @ Newton Abbot and Sept.Q.1852 yet another at Crediton, Dec. Q 1852 @ Tavistiock, remember these registration districts covered a large area, for example Newton Abbot went right down to the coast.
There is a Richard George, that should be significant married in Exeter in the December q. of 1851 district 10, entry no. 83. You are sure of the name Richard ?, have you got a certificate of any sort to identify him as your relative, as you are aware all research has to have proof.
You have my email, but I cannot reply, it keeps coming back.
Hope this is of use to you ?Ernest
