The surname of CANN was a locational name 'of Cann' a parish in the County of Dorset. In the Middle Ages, a man was identified by his place of birth and almost every city, town and village existing in medieval times has originated one or more family names. Anyone leaving his birthplace would be known to new friends and neighbours by the name of his former residence, his birthplace, or the land he owned. The name is very familiar in the County of Devon, of which I have managed to research my Cann ancestors back to the late 1700's in the parish of Morchard Bishop. I know that my ancestors go further back in this parish but further research is required to identify the correct William Cann out of a possible three.
