Seeking ancestors of a Cann Family of Abbeville County, SC. Undocumented genealgoy states that they are descended from a Reverend John Cann, the 1st. of the Canns to America, who was a minister and was the leader of the English Brownists(Baptists) at Amsterdam soon after the restoration of 1660. He was the publisher of an edition of the Bible, with marginal notes and references (1664). He also helped to found the Baptists in Bristol, England.His ancestors in Bristol, England, over 250 years ago wre some of the merchants who helped forge the reputation of Bristol as a leader in foreign trade. Reverend John Cannn, 1st of the Canns to America was son of Sir Wm. Cann ( died 16i57/58), was married to a Margaret Yoemans ( daughter of Sir. Robert Yoemans). Sir Wm. Cann was executed in the Civil war. He was member of Common Council of Bristol in 1632 -58; alderman ( 1648-58); sheriff, 1633- 36, Mayor 1648-49, and Treasurer of the Merchants Venturers; also Master of the Merchants Venturers. Reverend John Cann, his son, came to Boston, Massachusetts in 1660. In 1661, he married Esther Read, daughter of Wm. Read of Boston. Rev. John cann served in the Militia of Massachusetts in King Philips War in 1675. According to records, an Obadiah Cann from S.E. emigrated from S.E. Virginia in late 1790's and settled in Abbeville County, SC. His eldest son was Jesse Wagner Cann; second son was Obadiah Lynch Cann, Jr. A grandson was named John Steward Cann. Speculate that the Cann Family might be descended from the Lynch family of Virginia and possibly Wagner family. All assistance appreciated.
