We have spent a lot of time researching the Cann family tree and have traced back to South Tawton in Devon, around the time that you mention. In South Tawton, which is within about 10 miles of Crediton, there are numerous records of the Cann family; also many mentions in churchyards in South Tawton and Spreyton (also nearby). Unfortunately, John is a very common Cann name; we came to a standstill when we discovered 3 John Canns born in South Tawton, within months of each other. Our branch of the family tree includes three brothers, John, James and George (if my memory is serving me correctly!) who left Devon in the mid 1800s to go to Guernsey. Much information found in the Morman records. Contact me if there is anything that fits in with your info.
