I was wondering if you knew the origin of your name.In my ancestry there is a Stephen Cnnavan who was supposedly related to my family (Grogan). My grandfather, Patrick Grogan was born in Co. Westmeath. It is not yet proven, but his parents were Michael Grogan and Bridget or Ann Cunningham.
According to records we received from the lawyer in Clifden, Co. Galway (my grandfather married Annie Wallace of this town), Stephen Canavan was related to the Grogan's in some way.His widow, Mary Canavan (maiden name unknown so far) is currently living with her daughter Barbara Carty in Co. Wicklow.Apparently, Mary Canavan told the lawyer that my brother was indeed a cousin of Stephen Canavan.Barbara Carty would be able to tell my brother about her grandmother who was a "Grogan" from Co. Westmeath.
So far, I have not had contact from Barbara Carty, despite getting in contact with her son.I think that I am just going to pay the fee and get her direct phone no. in Ireland and see who was whom etc .
I'll keep in contact. However, it has been my experience in doing my research that family names tend to repeat themselves.
Best wishes in the meantime and feel free to contact me at my website listed above.I am also on the Canavan genforum.
Take care
Shaaron
