I have Canavan relatives with info starting in 1855, Milwaukee. His name was James and his wife was Catherine Roach. They were married on 10/28/1855 in St. Gall's Church.
They had four sons: Edward Lawrence, Thomas Jefferson, William Walter and Joseph Francis(who died at 13 months). James was in the Milwaukee volunteers, company D of the 6th regiment of infantry during the Civil War and killed at the battle of Gravely Run in Five Forks, VA. Edward and his mother apparently remained in Milwaukee but Thomas was sent to Illinois and no one seems to know where William ended up. I have more info so if this sounds like your family, please contact me.
