Dear Cuz,
I too, have worried with this question. one problem is the large # of Canals/Canales that
migrated at about the same time frame w/ the same given names. If you have connections in Mexico City you might be able to search muni archives or church records.
Francisco Canals --Military--Abt 1650
Antonio Canales--Merchant--Abt 1600
(Another) Francisco Canales--b. Abt 1570, Spain. Married to Francisca Gonzales.
