The dissertation, CHICANO JEWS IN SOUTH TEXAS by Carlos Montalvo Larralde is at UCLA, written in 1978. Beginning on page 120, it mentions how Jose Canales, a lawyer and a representative of Cameron County in the Texas senate, was a relative of Juan Cortina and that he came from a distinguished Jewish family. The KKK hated him because of his Jewish background.

I found a copy of this dissertation in the Benson Latin American collection at the University of Texas at Austin.
