Jewish roots of Canales name

Does anyone know of Jewish roots of the Canales name? I know that some of my ancesters were Italian, but when I began attending a synogogue a few years ago, a scholar at the service told me that the Canales original settlers of South Texas were Jewish. I verified that information in a dissertation titled "Chicano Jews of South Texas," but the author (forgot his name) does not cite a source.
