Thank you for checking David- I checked everything I could think of as well and came up with nothing. They were together on the 1871 census and had several children together. I wonder if there was a reason the Church would not marry them, give them a blessing. It is so odd. I thought that Joseph may have gone by a different surname, but that did not happen until he moved to Vermont. His middle name was Edouard. I checked under that name as well and nothing.
