3132. JAMES ROBERTSON
James Robertson b. Birch Hill, Lot 49, PEI 17JUL1853 (11AUG1854 in 1901, AUG1852 in 1911), bpt. Free Church of Scotland by the Rev. D. McDonald 21SEP1853, d. Birch Hill, Lot 49, PEI 29JUN1931, m. 31AUG1875 Caroline Jenkins (b. Birch Hill (Greek River, Lot 63, Kings Co., PEI), Lot 49, PEI 12JUN1854 (20JUN1855 in 1901, JUN1855 in 1911, ca. 1856), bpt. Free Church of Scotland by the Rev. D. McDonald 8OCT1854, d. Pownal (Mount Albion, Lot 48), Queens Co., PEI 17FEB1930), d/o Thomas and Sarah Jane (Gray) Jenkins.
The Prince Edward Island Baptismal Index gives James’ wife as Caroline Jenkins, and lists some of their children. Most if not all of the baptisms were likely performed by the Rev. J. Goodwill of the Church of Scotland. Generally, Birch Hill is located in Lot 49; but seems to overlap into Lot 48. For example, in the 1901 census, James and Caroline Robertson were in Lot 49, Queens Co. East, PEI. James was b. 11AUG1854 and Caroline was b. 20JUN1855. In both cases, these dates-of-birth contradict baptismal records; and I would think the baptismal records are more likely correct. With them was a daughter, Mertie A. (9JUL1880), and other children: William C. (17AUG1882), Venettia M. (14MAR1884), Annie (20APR1886), Everet C. (18JUL1888), Hyrum (24MAR1893) and Campbell M. (17FEB1896.)
They were also in Lot 49, Queens Co., PEI in the 1911 census.
Other information is found in the on-line version of the IGI.

James Robertson was the s/o:
313. MARY MURRAY
Mary Murray b. Tabusintac 19OCT1817, d. Lot 49, PEI 11AUG1857 aet. 39 years, m. 1841 James Robertson (b. PEI ca. 1813 (1812 on headstone), d. Birch Hill, Lot 48, Prince Co., PEI 1895; m. 2nd Caroline Jenkins), s/o Thomas and Sarah (Jenkins) Robertson.
They had eight children when she died. Apparently based on an obituary in, The Islander, issue of 21AUG1857.
James Robertson in 1881, in Lot 49, Queens Co., PEI, was age 69 and a farmer, with a wife, Mary, age 64 and children: James (27) with a wife, Caroline (25) and Ann (25.) With them was James, Sr.’s father, Thomas Robertson (71.) This James Robertson is more likely he who m. Mary Murray. His wife, Mary (again likely a 2nd wife) was German; but the rest of the family was Scottish and all were Church of Scotland and b. PEI. Thomas Robertson was a widower and a merchant. James, Jr. and his wife, Caroline, had two daughters: Isabella (4) and Alice (b. JUL1880.) The IGI makes James’ 2nd wife as Mary Jenkins. This seems reasonable as the Jenkins’ were of Germanic origin. Elsewhere, Mary Jenkins b. ca. 1814, m. 1st 25JUL1842 William Brown; m. 2nd ca. 1860 James Robertson; and was the d/o George and Margaret (Acorn) Jenkins. This would make Mary Jenkins a sister of Mary Murray's brother-in-law, John Councillor Jenkins [315A].
The Prince Edward Island Baptismal Index gives some of James’ and Mary’s children.
Their children were:
3131. GEORGE ROBERTSON b. ca. 1844.
Said to be in Falconwood Asylum in Charlottetown, PEI in the 1891 census.
In Charlottetown, in 1881, there was a place headed by Andrew Brown with a large number of diverse persons. Amongst them is George Robertson b. PEI ca. 1847. It is not clear whether this is a hotel, boarding house or hospital such as Falconwood Asylum.
An article on the infamous conditions in the early days of the asylum is, "A Blot Upon the Fair Fame of Our Island: The Scandal at the Charlottetown Lunatic Asylum, 1874", by Peter A. Rider, apparently in a periodical (possibly, 'Island Magazine') pp. 3-9, 1994 or after. The article deals with a court review of consitions in JUL1874 and the controversy which followed. Amongst the complaints was that the keeper, a labourer with no qualifications, Richard Moore Gridley, " . . . abused George Robertson and beat him with a rake handle . . . ." The names of other inmates of the time do not match the names in the 1881 census. One of the women mentioned, however, appears in a similar list headed by Mary Duffy. Presumably (as all are female) this is the women's segment of the institution. Presumably George, in the first list, is the same George Robertson. The numbers do not suggest the whole population of the institution, but more likely the staff of the new institution which replaced that of the 1874 report. Thus George, in 1881, may have been an employee rather than inmate.

McDonald 8OCT1854, d. Pownal, Queens Co., PEI 17FEB1930), d/o Thomas and Sarah Jane (Gray) Jenkins
