Samuel HADDEN & Mary SLEITH - Co. Tyrone Ireland > Prince Edw. Co. Ontario 1840s

I'd like to find more information and any descendants of the Samuel HADDEN & Mary SLEITH family who emigrated from Co. Tyrone, Ireland, to Prince Edward Co., Ontario, in the 1840s. Their children born 1820s to 1840s in Ireland and Ontario were James, William, Sarah Anne, Richard, Mary Jane "Jennie," Magdalene "Maggie," and possibly Samuel Jr.

Samuel HADDEN was born about 1795 in Co. Tyrone, Ireland, and lived in or near Aughnacloy, Carnteel parish, c. 1820s-1840s, where he was a weaver. About 1822 he married Mary SLEITH, born about 1801-1803 in Ireland. They baptised children at Aughnacloy Presbyterian church from 1823 to 1835, and at Carnteel parish Church of Ireland 1839-1842.

Samuel and Mary HADDEN emigrated to Canada 1842-1845 and settled in Prince Edward Co., Ontario. Samuel Hadden apparently died before the 1851 census, when his children were divided into several households. He also could have died in Ireland and his widow and children emigrated; I haven't researched Prince Edward records fully and there may be sources that show more about the Haddens.

Samuel's wife Mary Sleith Hadden died 17 February 1888 at Picton, Prince Edward Co., Ontario. She is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Prince Edward Co.

Samuel Hadden and Mary Sleith's children included:

1. James HADDEN - born October 1823 at Drummart/Drummond near Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone. James appears in Canadian censuses 1851-1911 in Prince Edward Co. About 1852 or later he married Margaret ____ (born about 1819-died 1877), a native of Co. Fermanagh, Ireland. If James and Margaret had children, I haven't yet identified them; full census entries for 1861 and 1871 would help, since I only have heads of household so far. James died 15 April 1919 at Wellington, Prince Edward Co.

2. Sarah Anne HADDEN - born 1826 Aughnacloy, Carnteel parish, Co. Tyrone (baptised in May 1826). Did Sarah Anne live to adulthood, marry, come to Ontario with her parents? She's not in the 1851 Ontario census with her siblings, but if she married before then, she would have been counted under her husband's surname.

3. Samuel HADDEN - born about 1824-1830, is possibly a son of Samuel Hadden & Mary Sleith. He appears in the 1851 census of York Co., Ontario, a blacksmith, age 24, Presbyterian, born Ireland. He's in later censuses as well, and some researchers have posted queries about him on the forums, including Susan Lomness in Britsh Columbia. This Samuel Hadden married Margaret Gallagher (according to Susan's family tree) and named his first son "James."

4. William HADDEN - born 23 July 1832 Aughnacloy, Carnteel parish, Co. Tyrone, and died young.

5. William HADDEN - born 28 February 1835 Aughnacloy, Carnteel parish, Co. Tyrone. Appears in Prince Edward Co. censuses 1851-1911, never married, died 19 October 1922 Wellington, Prince Edward Co. He is buried in Wellington Cemetery, Prince Edward Co.

6. Richard HADDEN - born 4 May 1839 Aughnacloy, Carnteel parish, Co. Tyrone, appears in Prince Edward Co. censuses 1851-1901. Richard became a well-known and successful hardware merchant in Picton, where he died 17 December 1909. His large and ornately-styled home is a Picton landmark today. Richard married Catherine "Kate" ROSABECK (1835-1915) and their children included Charles E. Hadden, Lillie H./Lily Belle, Evelyn Maude and at least one other daughter who died young.

7. Mary Jane (Jennie) HADDEN - born 21 December 1841 Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, appears in Prince Edward Co. 1851 census, and is probably with her family in 1861-1871, though in those censuses I've only got heads of household so far. She married James Charles NORTH on 30 September 1874 in Picton, Prince Edward Co. Their children included Mary A. (Mamie) and Charles H. North. Mary Jane died 3 April 1914 in Picton.

8. Magdalene "Maggie" HADDEN - born November 1847 in Kingston, Frontenac Co., Ontario, appears in the Prince Edward Co. 1851 census, and is probably with her family in 1861. She married John F. VANHORN (1842-1922) on 27 October 1869 in Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario. Their children were Mary H., Richard, and William Harold Vanhorn. John F. Vanhorn was a prominent soap manufacturer and business entrepreneur; see "A Cyclopaedia of Canadian Biography," 1886, for his career. They moved to Washington (U.S. state) in 1890, where Maggie died in 1902 at Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington.

I'm always glad to share research notes and welcome any additions or corrections.
