Ross of Flat River + Gay of Pownal

To anyone interested in these lines, it is commonly posted that Donald Ross m. Olivia Gay was the son of Ewen Ross & Frances Lamont, and that Ewen (Hugh) Ross m. Frances MacDonald was the only son of John & Mary Nicholson Ross. Both Ewen Jr (Hugh) and John were sons of Ewen Ross m. Ann Gillis (commonly called Nancy Gillies). But I think we have the grandchildren of Ewen/Nancy mixed up. I may not be the only person to come to this conclusion but according to the adminstration of John Ross, who was murdered by his Nicholson in-laws in 1813, his widow Mary lived in Lot 49 and they had 5 children not just one. They were Catherine, Hugh, Margaret, Donald, and Christiana. As the Widow Ross had moved to the Pownal area it would make sense that her children married into families there, i.e. the Gays. The dates make sense and several previously unconnected Rosses (at least in on-line sources) such as Christina (Mrs James Brehaut) and Catherine (Mrs Lewis Gay) can be accounted for in this way, so:

Catherine b. abt. 1803 m. Lewis Gay (makes sense as John & Mary Nicholson were married in 1803 after their Polly voyage)

Hugh. b. abt. 1807 m. Frances MacDonald and stayed in Flat River, probably on his father's land;

Margaret, must have been born abt. 1810 but no further record;

Donald b. abt. 1812 m. Olivia Gay;

Christiana b. abt. 1813 m. James Brehaut/Burhoe of Lot 49 and bondsman was Lewis Gay.

Perhaps this can clear up some confusion for online researchers. I plan to see if the widow Mary (Nicholson) Ross had a will that could confirm this. If anyone else agrees that this makes sense, or has any further information, I would like to hear from them.
