Hugh Gibney is listed in the Federal Census of 1871 (Ontario Index) of Heads of Households and Strays…

as Hugh Gibboney (age 56), living in Gwillimbury East, York North, Ontario.
Also living in Gwillimbury East, York North, Ontario, are three other Gibboney families: James (age 42), James (age 74) and Thomas (age 33), all born in Ireland. If you consult the actual microfilm for a detailed listing, you might get some clues as to their relationship.
Hugh Gibney is listed in the 1881 Canadian Census…

mis-transcribed and/or mis-spelled as Hugh Gilnez, living in Gwillimbury East, York North, Ontario.
The family includes Hugh Gilnez (age 68) and wife Catherine (age 52) and a grown up family of 4.The youngest, William (age 17) was born in Ireland, suggesting the family arrived in Canada after 1864.Other Gilnez families living nearby are Charles (age 26, born in Ontario) & his wife Elizabeth and James (age 50, born in Ireland) & his wife Margaret.
If you can find any of them in the 1901 Census, the 1901 asks for year of immigration to Canada…

You might be able to find them living in the same area in 1891.This census has not been transcribed and you will have to consult the original microfilms.

The marriages or deaths of the children might tell you where in Ireland they were born.Maybe your local library has a subscription to Ancestry.com.
