Smith-Rau-Knox of Trenton and Murray
The book Historic Hastings by Gerald E. Boyce mentions James SMITH as the first permanent settler in Trenton.
A James Smith, (probably the same man), from Dutchess County, NY, was granted 200 acres, lot 3, concession 2, Sidney Township on 12 Aug 1789 by the Land Board, Mecklenburg.
There is a will of a James Smith, of Murray, (possibly the same man), dated 1803, probated 1805 that mentions children Silas, James, Henry, John (who may have married Elizabeth RAU, or Row), Dorcus, Easter, Phoebe and Bathsheba.
Yet another man named James Smith U.E. was granted 649 acres in Murray Township. (Fiat dated 9 Sep 1800).
Can anyone establish if these men were the same?
I am particularly interested in a Mary Smith 1810-1838 who married a James KNOX and lived at lot 5, concession 2, Sidney Township
