McGill Scotland > Ontario early 1800's

My ggg grandmother Margaret McGill was born in Paisley Scotland 1809 or 1813. She married George Hinkson (born 1805 in VT) in Whitby in 1831. They had a couple children there and then moved to Sanilac Co Mich before 1850. William McGill was a witness at her wedding. I have good records on her once she moved to MI but don't know any names of parents or sibs, when they came, etc. Family lore is that she was related to the McGill who founded the university and that her father or grandfather was a goldsmith in Scotland. My understanding is that Canadian Census didn't start until 1851 and they were in Mich by then. Are there histories of the Whitby area or other census that might shed some light on her earlier history? Any assistance on this is greatly appreciated. I have had no luck finding earlier history other than the clue of William McGill. Thanks
