MERRITT from Nova Scotia to NY

The 1855 NY State census for the Town of Marlborough in Ulster Co. lists David T. MERRITT, b. 1784 in Nova Scotia.
I believe he is from the MERRITTs of Rye, NY who settled in Ulster Co., but apparently his parents went to Nova Scotia between those NY stays, possibly Loyalists. Any information about Nova Scotia MERRITTs who came from (and to) New York would be appreciated.
