The Clan MacNeil News - June, 1929 Representative of C.B. M'Neils in British Columbia
In response to the invitation in the last edition of the Clan Macneil News to all Macneils to send family sketches, a very interesting letter has been received from Mrs. A.F. Hautier of Lytton, British Columbia, a descendant of one of the early MacNeil settlers of the district of Boisdale in the County of Cape Breton, Province of Nova Scotia. Mrs. Hautier tells that her father's name was John W. Macneil, and his father's name was James Macneil, the son of Neil Macneil, one of the first settlers of the district of Boisdale. Her father's brother was Neil Macneil, and members of his family, (Clann Neil Sheumas Neill) has been until recently on the old homestead at Boisdale. Her father's mother was Ann Maclean, a daughter of Roderick Maclean, one of the early settlers at the Barrachois in the same district or parish of Boisdale. A son of Roderick Maclean was Alexander Maclean, who was a well know resident of that district until his death, which occurred only a few years ago. A large vacant dwelling bearing the name "The Barrachois Hotel" stands today on the old homestead of the Macleans. Mrs. Hautier gives the names of her grandfather's family as follows: Neil Macneil, who died at Boisdale about fifteen or sixteen years ago; John W. Macneil, her father, who died in Vancouver on the 3rd day of October, 1914 and is buried in Lytton, B.C., with his wife who predeceased him on April 7, 1909; Roderick Macneil who was killed at
Port Morien ?hen known as Cow Bay) in the early 60's; Sarah, who died ? Port Morien, and Kate ? married to John Edwards) and ?d at River Hebert, Cumberland Co., N.S. Mrs. Hautier's father John W. ? was born at Boisdale and ? young man went to Stel-? (must be Stellarton), Nova Scotia, where he was married to Mary Mahoney in? by the late Rev. Alexander Macsween who later became parish priest of Boisdale and died there. There was quite a large family of sons and daughters. The eldest James Macneil was drowned off the steamer Ainsworth in the Kootenay Lake in 1908. Fred went overseas and was killed in action at Ypres, June 12th, 1916. Mrs. Hautier, Family Group Record for James MacNeil and Ann MacLean whose husband is propietor of the Globe Hotel at Lytton, B.C., is greatly interested in history of the Macneils and has become enrolled
in the Kisimul Sept of the Clan Macneil Association, and a subscriber to the News. We shall be greatly pleased and delighted to receive similar letters from all Macneils and descendants of Macneils in Canada or the United States.
