Hi,Carol, there was so much chaos before the Civil War, with Southerners trying to protect their workforce, the workers escaping to N.E or Canada or later, to the West, that it seems near impossible to track that ancestor. No wonder surnames changed, in order to protect their owners.
You never mentioned a Balch connection, since I could have helped with that. My husband is direct descendent, his family lived near original Balch house, and the genealogy library room intown must include Balchs. LD
