You need to go back and check the heading on the birth Record again. What it actually says is:
Emma Carter, illegitimate born April 20, 1875 in Newport dau of Hepsibah Carter; informant-Isabella Sanford
In her 1898 marriage to Maurice Flynn, Hepsy Carter(the record is mistakenly transcribed as “Hessie”) is recorded as being 46, a spinster and the daughter of John and Jemima Carter.
The earliest Census record available is 1871 and it records Hepsabeth Carter, age 20 living with Israel-age 36 and Isabell –age 35 Sanford and five young Sanford children She was probably there as a domestic. I can’t find her at all in the 1881 Census but in 1891 she is still living with Israel and Isabell and their large family. This Census clearly lists her as a domestic. In 1898 as mentioned above she marries Maurice Flynn.
The 1891 Census lists Emma age 16 as the adopted daughter of Elisha and Mary Sanford.
The 1881 Census or Scotch Village, Hants Co lists the family as follows:
Elisha Sandford age 61
Mary Sandford – age 59
Alexander Sandford-age 19
Ansley Sandford –age 17
Emmer Carter – age 5
The 1871 Census lists the family of Elisha and Mary as follows:
Elisha Sanford-50 and Mary Sanford-48
Their children Bejamin-18, Joseph-16; Lydia-15; and George A.-7
This suggests some areas of research-for instance was Israel an older son of Elisha. Was Emma's father one of the Sanford men. Can’t seem to come up with the parents of Israel from the records.
