Thank you Eileen for your reply, the family on the 1861 census is the one that I was refering to. Alexander was in the Royal Horse Artillery 7th Battalion. I have received this week the certifcate for Sarah Jane from the army register book which comfirms Alexander's regiment and that she was born in Newfoundland to Alex and Jane. I also got the certificate for Ellen from Devon records, which again confirms that Ellen is the daughter of Alexander and Jane but this time gives Jane's maiden name which was Allan. So I have the right family. I can only asume that Alexanders first wife Margaret died in Newfoundland, as she was the mother of John. Alexander, Margaret and George my 2xgreatgrandfather are on the 1841 scottish census at Leith fort.
You have put my mind at rest by giving me the link to show that the 7th battalion were in Newfoundland during this time. I have been to my library today trying to find that out. Many thanks. Susan
