Certainly, there are others from the Royal Artillery who show up in the parish records in the same timeframe:

Note that they mostly say they are from the 8th Company or 7th Battalion -- to which one did Alexander belong. If he was of the same company or Battalion, then you know he was in Newfoundland in that time period.

This page, from the British archives, indicates that the 7th Battalion was in Newfoundland from 1835 to 1850:
