Do you have any other information to narrow things down. Do you know the approximate year (or even decade!) that he emigrated to Australia. Was he married and if so what was his wife's name. Also, if he was born in Nova Scotia, what would lead you to think that he emigrated from a Newfoundland port? Every little bit of information help. There are a lot of William Skinners in Nova Scotia born about that time.
