visiting St Johns for research

I am planning to visit St Johns NF to do some research some time in the next year. Does anyone have any suggestions on where one can find information? Are the Provincial Archives a good place to start? are they in town? walking distance from hotels? what other sources are in town? church records? city records? I am looking for information from the mid-late 1800's. e.g. directories, census, titles, BDM info, newspapers.
