I am looking for information on, and trying to connect, the following McDONALDs who are located in Arlington, Bureau County, Illinois in the 1860 census. They have links to County Kerry, Ireland; Newfoundland, Canada; Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, and Nebraska.
*** Morris, 65, Ireland - Johanna (MANNING), 64, Ireland - Thomas, 25, New York - Morris, 22, New York
Morris' citizenship intent papers, filed in Bristol County, Massachusetts on the "second Monday in December, 1848", state that he was born in the "Parish of Do(rest is unreadable) in the Townland of Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland" on or about January 1, 1802 and that he arrived in New York on or about May 20, 1830. He filed his naturalization papers in Bureau County, Illinois on October 15, 1856. His name is also spelled Maurice.
In a bio of Morris Jr published in 1906 it says that his parents were natives of County Kerry who came to the US in about 1830, lived near Albany, NY where he was born, then moved to Fall River, Mass, then to Bureau County in 1849, 7 of their 10 children came to Bureau County, and only two were living there in 1906 - Morris Jr and Mrs. Hanorra COUGHLIN (COCKLIN).
In 1880, Johanna shows up as a widow and mother-in-law in the house of James and Hannora Coughlin in Bureau County.
*** James, 58, Ireland - Mary (unknown), 54, Ireland - Mary, 26, England - Morris, 18, England - Kate, 16, England - John, 14, England - Bridget, 11, England - Mary, 81, Ireland, mother
James filed his citizenship papers in Bureau County on March 28, 1856 and April 5, 1858.
Subsequent censuses show the children being born in Newfoundland.
In the 1880 census James is listed as father in the house of Thomas McDonald - see next entry.
*** Jeremiah, 57, Ireland - Thomas, 35, Ireland - Hannora (McDONALD), 25, Ireland - Kate, 2, Illinois - Mary, 1, Illinois
Jeremiah doesn't show up in later Bureau County censuses.
James shows up as father to Thomas in the 1880 census. - see previous entry.
All later censuses show Hannora being born in Newfoundland.
Their daughter Kate married Christopher BOYLAND. His 1906 bio states that both Thomas' and Hannora's families came through Newfoundland.
*** Bart, 38, Ireland - Catherine (unknown), 38, Ireland, Charles, 2, Illinois
Bart's family does not show up in later Bureau County censuses.
*** Patrick, 29, Ireland - Kate (CASSIDY), 22, Canada - James, 2, Canada - Peter, 1, Illinois
These are my g-g-grandparents, Peter is my great-grandfather. I have tracked both the McDonalds and Cassidys to the present time and the Cassidys back to an 1821 census of County Cavan, Ireland. Cassidys moved to what is today Ottawa, Ontario in the early 1820's, where Catherine (Kate) was born, then to Bureau County in 1847. Patrick and Kate were married in 1857 in neighboring LaSalle county. James was born in Illinois, not Canada.
Other names associated with these McDonalds are RYAN, HENNESSEY, O'CONNOR, McEVOY, MAGORIAN, SKEFFINGTON, BAGLEY, CORRIGAN, DALTON and NOONAN.
