Paffer or Pafrey or similar on Sound Island, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland

I am trying to verify the family name of Rachel who married Joseph Brinston from Sound Island, Placentia Bay about 1883. So far I have not found their marriage record.

On Family Search I found the Boston marriage of their son where his mother’s maiden name is given as Paffer. I had never heard of that surname but a quick search showed it does exist at least in Ontario although it is apparently rare. The recorded name could represent a reporting error on the part of the bridegroom or a transcription error as the Family Search data is a typed list apparently created from other records.

I wonder if the name might be Pafrey as Joseph’s brother married Mary Pafrey on Sound Island in 1871. Any information you have on these or other similar surnames in Newfoundland especially in Placentia Bay would be appreciated.
