Hi Dorothy,
1860KINGFIELD, FRANKLIN, ME
BENSON
Thomas S., age 30, born ME
Ruth A., age 23, born ME
Ida May, age 1, born ME
Isaac B., age 65, born New Brunswick
I looked for Thomas in 1850 and while looking found his marriage but not to Ruth
Oct. 14, 1851 Newburyport, Massachusetts
Thomas S. Benson age 21 born Belome, ME
parent Isaac R. Benson and Eliza F. Benson
married Margaret J. Clemons, age 19, born Hampton NH
parents Charles W. Clemens and Mehitable Clemens
in the image it does look like Isaac B. not R.
and another marriage for Thomas
Nov. 2, 1864 Worcester, Massachusetts
Thomas S. Benson, age 34, born Palmer, ME
parents Isaac B. and Eliza F.
married
Clara Whitney, age 36, born Haward
parents Luther and Melinda
In the image Thomas is a physician and born Palerno, ME - 2nd marriage
so now I am wondering if the Isaac B. in 1860 census with son Thomas S. is the same fellow as there Thomas is listed as a farmer, not a physician and his wife has the wrong name
It seems like quite the coincidence
1870BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA
BENSON
Ruth A., age 33, widow, keeping house, born ME
Ida M., age 11, attending school, born ME
Cora B., age 9, attending school born ME
so no Thomas with them - could it be same fellow ? Could it be she is not a widow, but divorced or ??
I guess I am off on a tangent with Thomas but he is an interesting guy to figure out - in Civil War soldier records he is listed as a physician also
He seems to have died March 8,1888 as there is a listing for him in headstones for deceased Civil War vets and it has same unit as shown for his joining up - actually two listings for same fellow, same death date, one shows him buried Buckfield, MASS the other says Buckfield, ME
in his pension file there is no widow mentioned but says in 1891 they filed on behalf of a minor but did not name them
I fund a Thomas S. Benson in 1880 Michigan born Maine with yet another wife and he is listed as blind so perhaps injured in the war?
I went to find a grave and he is there so it is the right fellow
Corp. Thomas Solon Benson
born 1830 Palermo , Waldo Co. ME
died march 10, 1888 Buckfield, Oxford Co. ME
son of Isaac B. Benson and Eliza Pelton
Thomas married may 27, 1873 Cedar Rapid IA to Anna E. Gale
4 children - Daisy, Thomas Roy, Solon F., and Lewis Bernard.
It said he was a physician in Co. H or the 3rd MA cavalry which matches with the Civil War records
Isaac B. Benson is also at find a grave - does not have much except it does say he was a veteran of he War of 1812 so thatmay hold some clues
I have a land grant petition for one of my ancestors and he was also in the War of 1812 and the land petition gave his father's name - not his mothers though, but that is a though - maybe look for a land grant for Isaac
I wonder if he was still in Canada and fought for the British or if he was then an American ??
anyway, not any help really on Isaac - I can only suggest you try to follow up on the 1812 connection.
