Hi Thomas,
WOW!!! I am absolutely speechless!
Nathan's letters in his own handwriting are a real treasure....and that is such a good picture!
Yes, Nathan's parents were Thomas Remsen Crawford and Winnifred Crawford - her maiden name, as you state, was Williams.Thank you for that.Nathan's wife was Elizabeth S.....?In one of his letters, he refers to his wife as, "his Betsy".
The background you provided on the Crawford family is just great...I never expected to receive so much information and it is my plan to go to Library & Archives Canada and order the records of the three Canadians who were part of this crew, which, by the way, was an RCAF crew, flying a Canadian-built Lancaster bomber. There were three Canadians, three Brits and one Australian aboard this aircraft.According to what I have read, they were considered an elite crew of airman and hand-picked.The pilot alone had flown 92 sorties.
I have some information on Nathan from the RCAF Association.Part of this states:
- Born in Appling, Georgia, 16 September 1909 but educated in Moncton, 1915 to 1926.- Obtained a Bachelor of Science degree (University of South Sewance, Tennessee).
- Employed by Canada Creosote Company (Truro, Nova Scotia), 1931-1932, and International Nickel Company of Canada (Copper Cliff, Ontario), 1933-1941.
- Married in Sudbury but ultimately home given as Chatham, New Brunswick (perhaps because his wife was living there late in the war).
- Enlisted at North Bay, Ontario, 9 September 1941.
It has been especially difficult researching this crew in more ways than one.It brings one back to the reality of war and how the families of these young men suffered.I saw it in my own family.
You have such good "stuff" on the New Brunswick Archives.I haven't been on this site in a while but I managed to do almost a complete line on another uncle of mine (by marriage) as well as a cousin-related family named Folster from Grand Falls.Information is abundant on PANB and well presented.
Thank you so much, Thomas, I am so grateful for your help.
Dorothy
